Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This mighty waterfall forms a spectacular backdrop along the Zambian Banks of the great Zambezi River. It is 1690m from left to right, has an average height of 92m, and when in flood discharges as much as 550 million litres of water a minute. But the statistics are unimportant: the mighty cascade of the Zambezi River as it plunges into the Batoka Gorge in the widest curtain of falling water on the planet remains, even to frequent visitors, a spectacle of epiphanic proportions.

The force of the water as it pours with a roar into the chasm causes great gusts of air to shoot a curtain of spray high into the air that can be seen from up to 30km away, which gave rise to the Victoria Fall’s original name fo Mosi-oa-tunya, ‘the smoke that thunders’. Around the falls is a genuinely important and interesting rainforest, with plant species (especially ferns) rarely found else where in Zambia or Zimbabwe. These are sustained by the clouds of spray, which blanket the immediate vicinity fo the falls. You will also find various monkeys and baboons here, whilst the lush canopy shelters Livingstone’s lourie amongst other birds.

There are a number of activities to do around the Victoria Falls area, some of these activities are River Cruises, where you experience the spell binding combination of the sunset and the great Zambezi River. White Water Rafting is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to raft what is considered the wildest one-day white water rafting experience in the world. There are also helicopter flights which is a wonderful way to view the falls, from a birds eye view! Elephant back safari is one of the most exciting and unique ways of going on safari. It’s and exhilirating elephant experience rather than just an elephant ride. Bungee Jumping – at 111 meters, it’s one of the highest commercial jumps in the world, so hurling yourself off the Victoria Falls Bridge is definately for adverture thrill-seekers only!
